To SAP HANA in 5 steps

SAPaccelerates your business processes significantly withHANA. For example, it is possible to have real-time reports at your disposal, giving you quicker insight into current data. That way you make better decisions. But what is involved in the transition to this platform?

In this blog we describe 5 steps with which you can successfully complete the transition to SAP HANA.

1. Determine the size of the new environment
The crucial question is how much capacity you need. The answer determines what the technical solution looks like. SAP HANA works completely different technically than all other database software, because it puts your database in the internal memory of a computer. That makes the system super fast.

2. Clean up your data and use it sparingly
If you are in the process of determining capacity, it is wise to take a critical look at the data that you want to use on theHANA platform. Does everything have to go to the new environment? You do well to use data wisely because it has a direct relationship with the amount of investments. Moreover, transferring data is time-consuming. This transition is therefore also a good time to think about archiving data.

3. HANA in the cloud or on-premise?
HANA is available in both an on-premise and a Cloud version. Aspects such as data security, performance and flexibility determine which delivery model fits best. An important advantage of SAP HANA in the cloud is that it is more flexible: scaling up or down is easier. A cloud provider flexibly delivers the capacity you need. Of course you pay for that flexibility. An on-premise solution is preferred when high demands are placed on performance and safety, and on flexibility in cooperation with other systems.

4. Two choices with an on-premise solution
With an on-premise solution you can choose from a “turn-key” solution (appliance) or a “supported” configuration (TDI: Tailored Data Center Integration) that you can build yourself. The question is what better fits your organization. In the first case, the configuration is fixed and the software is pre-installed. The system is therefore delivered ready for use faster. If you want more flexibility, the ‘supported’ configuration (TDI) is the alternative. You can then reuse your existing hardware, among other things. In this case, the user has the responsibility to ensure that all parts work well together.

5. Reserve budget for training
The innovative nature of HANA also entails the introduction of a number of new techniques, makes it a good idea to consider Managed Services. If you do not outsource your IT management, it is wise to train your employees. Then you know for sure that you will get the most out of SAP HANA and can guarantee the continuity of the platform. All in all, going live is preceded by months of preparation. The benefits of switching to SAP HANA are nevertheless clear: innovation, acceleration of processes and better insight into business data.
